New England

New England is the stretch of coast between Long Island Sound and Cape Cod, with Newport, Rhode Island at its centre. The America’s Cup was sailed from Newport for 53 years, the Gilded Age families built their summer houses on its cliffs, and the harbour still fills every July and August with the yachts that spend the winter in the Caribbean and the Bahamas. Within 30 nautical miles of the town lie Block Island, the Elizabeth Islands, Martha’s Vineyard, Nantucket and the south shore of Cape Cod: cedar-shingled villages, clay cliffs, whaling-era towns and long sand beaches, each a two- to three-hour passage from the last. A week here is a loop out of Newport and back, with the yacht at a dock in town or at anchor in a sheltered pond every night.

Newport and Narragansett Bay

Most charters start and end in Newport, an hour and a half from Boston Logan and 40 minutes from Providence (but the starting and finishing point are flexible). The town is worth a day before or after the week: the mansions along Bellevue Avenue, with The Breakers and Marble House open for tours, the 3.5-mile (5.6 km) Cliff Walk between them and the sea, Fort Adams across the harbour, the International Tennis Hall of Fame, and the shops and restaurants of Thames Street and Bowen’s Wharf. The Newport Folk Festival is in late July and the Jazz Festival in early August, both at Fort Adams, both easiest to reach by tender. Narragansett Bay itself runs 25 miles (40 km) north to Providence, with Jamestown, Bristol and the Sakonnet River on the way.

Block Island

Block Island is 25 nautical miles south of Newport, two hours on a motor yacht. It is 7 miles (11 km) long with 17 miles (27 km) of beaches, and the Mohegan Bluffs on the south shore, clay cliffs about 150 ft (46 m) high with the Southeast Lighthouse on top, are the best-known view on this coast. There are two harbours a mile apart: Old Harbor, the Victorian village where the ferries land, with its shops, galleries and seafood restaurants, and the Great Salt Pond, a large sheltered lagoon where visiting yachts anchor or take a mooring. The island is for bicycles, the walking trails of Clay Head and the North Light, and the water toys in the pond.

Martha's Vineyard and Nantucket

Martha’s Vineyard has three towns within a few miles of each other: Vineyard Haven, Oak Bluffs with its painted gingerbread cottages and the Flying Horses carousel of 1876, and Edgartown, with its white Greek Revival captains’ houses and the harbour most yachts use. On the western end are the fishing village of Menemsha and the red, white and ochre Gay Head cliffs at Aquinnah. Nantucket lies 30 miles (48 km) out to sea and 25 nautical miles east of Edgartown. The whole town is a National Historic Landmark, with cobbled Main Street, the Whaling Museum and some 800 houses built before the Civil War; outside town are the village of Siasconset, the Sankaty Head lighthouse, Cisco Brewers and the surf beaches of the south shore. Dockage on both islands in July and August is booked months ahead, which is one of the reasons to charter rather than arrive on your own.

Cape Cod and the Elizabeth Islands

Hyannis is the main harbour of Cape Cod and the Kennedy family’s summer home, 26 nautical miles north of Nantucket across the Sound: a working waterfront, Main Street shops and restaurants, the John F. Kennedy Hyannis Museum, and the beaches of Craigville and Kalmus. Harwich Port, Chatham and the Cape Cod National Seashore on the outer Cape are an hour by car. West of the Cape, the Elizabeth Islands run from Woods Hole out into Buzzards Bay: Cuttyhunk at the far end, 1.5 miles (2.4 km) long, with fewer than a hundred year-round residents, no cars and the best striped bass fishing on the coast, and Hadley’s Harbor on Naushon Island, a landlocked anchorage between wooded private islands that is the lunch stop on the way back to Newport.

When To Go and How To Get There

Seasons, weather and flights

The New England season is short: mid-June to mid-September, with July and August the warm, settled months and the two Newport festivals. June can bring fog in the sounds and September the first autumn fronts, which is why most of the yachts arrive from the Caribbean and the Bahamas in June and leave again after Labor Day. Days are long, the sea in the sounds is calm behind the islands, and the water is at its warmest in August. Fly into Boston Logan (BOS), an hour and a half from Newport by car, or Providence (PVD), 40 minutes away. Nantucket (ACK) and Martha’s Vineyard (MVY) have their own airports with summer flights from New York, Boston and Washington, so a one-way charter can end on either island.

What a New England charter covers
Charter Planning

What a New England charter covers

The weekly rate covers the yacht and her full crew: captain, chef, stewardess and deckhands, from three on the 85-footers to eight on the largest. The chef cooks every meal aboard to a preference sheet you fill in before the charter, and the stewardess runs the interior, the bar and the service. The toys on board, usually a tender, jet skis, paddleboards, kayaks, towables and snorkel gear, are included. Dockage in Newport, Edgartown, Nantucket and Hyannis, fuel and provisioning come out of the advance provisioning allowance. Marina berths on the islands are reserved by the crew well ahead, and the itinerary is adjusted day by day around the weather and your own plans ashore.
