What a Week Costs

The honest range

Charter prices are quoted per week for the yacht, not per person, so the number that matters is the weekly rate divided by however many of you sail. Two things set this coast apart before you compare anything. The advertised figure is the yacht and crew only — food, drink, fuel and dockage are paid separately through an APA, with VAT on top, which lifts the real cost by around 50%. And the fleet itself leans heavily to motor yachts, which is why the Riviera prices above every other Mediterranean region in this comparison. Our listings for this area also cover Corsica and Sardinia, because the yachts based here cruise all three.

Sailing catamarans

The cheapest way onto this coast

A crewed sailing catamaran is the most economical crewed week on the Riviera, and it is the category where the coast looks least like its reputation: four cabins, a crew of two, and the freedom to anchor off the Îles de Lérins or Porquerolles instead of paying Riviera berthing. Median around €32,000 a week before APA and VAT — the highest catamaran median of any Mediterranean region we broker, and still the bargain here.

Power catamarans

A narrow but expensive slice

Power catamarans barely exist on this coast compared with the Caribbean, and those that do sit at the large, new end: twenty metres and up, eight guests, crew of three or four. Median around €65,000, which puts them close to the motor yachts rather than to the sailing cats.

What the Riviera is actually built around

This is the heart of the market here and the reason the coast is expensive: the fleet skews heavily to power, the boats are bigger than elsewhere in the Mediterranean, and the berths they use are the priciest in Europe. Median around €75,000 a week in our own fleet, with the upper tenth past €216,000 — and above that sits a whole tier of the market described further down.

Monohulls, classics and the racing pedigree

The Riviera keeps a real monohull fleet, from modern performance cruisers to restored classics with varnished decks — this is, after all, the coast of the Saint-Tropez and Monaco regattas. They take fewer guests than a catamaran of the same length. Median around €28,000 a week, the lowest figure on this page.

The superyacht tier
Above Our Listings

The superyacht tier

The table above covers the fleet we broker directly. The Riviera, though, is the centre of the European superyacht market, and above our own listings sits a tier that changes the picture completely. Across the wider brokerage market this coast shows a median motor yacht week of roughly €120,000 — well over our in-house median — with the top tenth past €480,000 and the largest boats quoted in the millions per week. Sailing yachts on the same wider market sit near €40,000. Four out of five yachts offered here are motor rather than sail, a ratio you see nowhere else in the Mediterranean, and it is the single clearest reason why the Riviera prices above Greece, Croatia and Italy. If your week belongs in that tier, we source it for you from outside our own listings — just tell us the budget.

What the headline figure does not cover
On Top of the Rate

What the headline figure does not cover

A Mediterranean charter is quoted as the yacht and crew only. Everything you consume — food, drink, fuel, dockage, port fees — is paid through an advance provisioning allowance (APA) of roughly 30 to 35% of the charter fee, handed to the captain before you board and settled against receipts at the end of the week. On top of that sits VAT, charged at the rate of the country the charter starts in. Add a customary gratuity of around 10% and the realistic total lands close to half as much again as the headline figure. On this coast the APA deserves particular attention: a summer night alongside in Monaco, Saint-Tropez or Cannes is the most expensive berthing in the Mediterranean, and in high season it is the line that moves the allowance most. Anchoring off the Îles de Lérins costs nothing.

Season

When it costs less

The Riviera season runs from May to October, and the peak is sharper here than anywhere else in the Mediterranean, because the calendar does it: the Cannes Film Festival in May, the Monaco Grand Prix at the end of the same month, then July and August. Those weeks carry the highest rates of the year and the tightest availability. June and September are the value weeks and, on this coast, the pleasant ones — the sea is warm, the towns are walkable and the anchorages are not full.

Getting More for the Money

Two levers that actually move the price

The biggest lever on price is not the coast but how many of you there are: a four-cabin catamaran costs the same whether six or twelve people sail on it. The second lever here is how much time you spend alongside. The Riviera is the one region where berthing can rival the fuel bill, so a week planned around anchorages, with two or three nights in port rather than seven, can save more than trading down a boat size. Tell us the budget rather than the boat, and we will show you what it actually reaches.

French Riviera Yacht Charter Prices: common questions

A crewed sailing catamaran has a median of about €32,000 a week, a power catamaran €65,000 and a motor yacht €75,000 in the fleet we broker directly; sailing monohulls are the most affordable at around €28,000. Across the wider superyacht market the motor yacht median is closer to €120,000. All of these are base charter fees, before APA and VAT.

Two reasons that compound. First, the fleet is different: roughly four out of five yachts offered here are motor rather than sail, and motor yachts cost several times what a sailing catamaran of similar length does. Second, berthing: a summer night in Monaco, Saint-Tropez or Cannes is the most expensive in the Mediterranean, and it is paid from your APA. Even the catamaran median here sits above every other Mediterranean region we broker.

Budget roughly half as much again as the headline rate. APA runs 30 to 35% of the charter fee and covers food, drink, fuel and dockage; VAT is charged at the rate of the country the charter starts in; crew gratuity is customarily around 10%. On a €32,000 catamaran week that puts the realistic total near €48,000.

Yes, and many charters do — the yachts based on this coast routinely cruise the Îles de Lérins, Corsica and the Ligurian coast, and our listings for this area cover Corsica and Sardinia as well as the Riviera itself. Crossing to Corsica costs a night passage and a chunk of fuel from the APA, so it suits a full week rather than a short one.

Early May before the Cannes Film Festival, late September and October. Avoid the Film Festival and Grand Prix weeks in May and the whole of July and August if price is the binding constraint. June and September usually give the best balance of weather, availability and cost.
