7-Night Crewed Catamaran Itinerary on the Amalfi Coast
Salerno to Salerno

Amalfi, Positano, Capri, Ischia and Sorrento in one week
Amalfi Coast by Catamaran
A 7-night crewed catamaran charter that starts and ends in Salerno, the quieter gateway to the Amalfi Coast: an hour from Naples airport, with a proper marina and none of the summer traffic that chokes the coast road. The route runs west along the cliffs to Amalfi and Positano, across to Capri, round to Ischia and Sorrento in the Bay of Naples, and back along the full length of the coast on the last day. Every leg is short, which is the point of doing this coast by catamaran: the hours are spent ashore in the towns, at anchor with the water toys out, or at a table on deck, not under way. Nights alternate between quiet anchorages and the harbours of Amalfi, Casamicciola and Sorrento. A crew of three, skipper, chef and hostess, handles the sailing, the meals, the moorings and the tender, so the week is yours.

Amalfi Coast Catamaran Charter Itinerary
Total Distance: ~105nm Cruising Time: ~15 Hours
Route: Salerno — Amalfi — Positano — Capri — Ischia — Sorrento — Salerno
Vessel: Crewed Sailing Catamaran

Saturday — Welcome aboard
Day 1: Salerno | Boarding
Boarding in Salerno in the late afternoon. The crew meet you on the dock, take the luggage aboard and open the first bottle: a welcome cocktail on the aft deck while the skipper shows you the catamaran, the cabins and the plan for the week. Salerno itself is worth an evening walk if you arrive early, with a long seafront promenade, a medieval old town and the cathedral where the apostle Matthew is said to be buried. Dinner is served on board. The first night is spent in port, so you unpack once and wake up already at sea level, with nothing to do before breakfast.

Sunday — The Ancient Maritime Republic
Day 2: Salerno to Amalfi | ~10nm
Breakfast on board, then a short sail west along the cliffs to Amalfi, about an hour and a half with the coast on your right the whole way. We moor in the harbour of the old maritime republic, for centuries one of the four great sea powers of Italy, and the morning is yours in town: the Cathedral of Sant’Andrea at the top of its sixty-two steps, the medieval Arsenale where the republic’s galleys were built, and the Paper Museum in a thirteenth-century mill, where Amalfi’s handmade paper is still pressed by hand. Lunch is served back on board. In the afternoon a car can take you up to Ravello, 350 metres above the sea, for the gardens of Villa Rufolo and the belvedere of Villa Cimbrone, with the whole coast laid out below. Night in the port of Amalfi.

Monday — Along the Sorrento Peninsula
Day 3: Amalfi to Positano | ~20nm
Breakfast on board, then an unhurried sail along the Sorrento Peninsula. The catamaran rounds Punta Campanella, the headland that faces Capri across a narrow strait, and passes Li Galli, the three small islands where the Sirens of the Odyssey are said to have lived and where Rudolf Nureyev had his last home. Positano appears as a wall of pastel houses stacked up a ravine, which is why Italians call it the Città Verticale. We anchor in the bay and the tender drops you at the beach. The afternoon is for the boutiques on the stepped lanes, the church of Santa Maria Assunta with its majolica dome, and a long lunch or an early dinner at one of the restaurants on the sand. Night at anchor off Positano, with the town lit up above you.

Tuesday — The Island of Emperors
Day 4: Positano to Capri | ~12nm
A short morning crossing to Capri, twelve miles of open water. The tender lands you at Marina Grande and the day is open. The chairlift from Anacapri takes you to Monte Solaro, the highest point of the island, with a view that reaches from the Bay of Naples to the Gulf of Salerno. Villa San Michele, the Gardens of Augustus above the switchbacks of Via Krupp, and the Piazzetta, the small square that fills with people from lunch until late, are all within walking distance of the bus and funicular. The Blue Grotto on the north shore is visited by rowing boat and only when the sea is calm; the skipper will tell you in the morning whether it is open. Back on board, the catamaran moves round to the south side for an aperitif in front of the Faraglioni, the three rock stacks off the island’s south-eastern point. Night at anchor.

Wednesday — The Green Island
Day 5: Capri to Ischia | ~18nm
We leave Capri at dawn and have breakfast under way, crossing the mouth of the bay towards Ischia, the largest and greenest of the islands. The morning is spent at anchor off the coast with the paddleboard and the kayak in the water, followed by lunch on board. In the afternoon the catamaran enters the port of Casamicciola on the island’s north coast, a spa town since Roman times, built around hot springs that still feed its thermal gardens and hotels. Free time to explore: a thermal pool, the hill villages inland, or a taxi across to Ischia Ponte and the Aragonese Castle on its rock, joined to the island by a stone causeway. Night in port.

Thursday — The Bay of Naples
Day 6: Ischia to Sorrento | ~17nm
Breakfast on board, then across the bay to Sorrento, which sits on a shelf of cliffs at the northern edge of the peninsula. From the water the view takes in the whole Gulf of Naples: Vesuvius, the city spread along the far shore, and the islands of Capri and Ischia behind you. The tender lands you at Marina Grande, the old fishing harbour, and a lift or the stairs bring you up to the town: Piazza Tasso, the lemon gardens, the inlaid-wood workshops that have worked here since the eighteenth century, and limoncello made from the local lemons. Sorrento is also the easiest point on the route for a half-day on land, with Pompeii forty minutes away by train or car. Night in port.

Friday — The Amalfi Coast from the Sea
Day 7: Sorrento to Salerno | ~30nm
Breakfast on board, then the longest and most scenic leg of the week: the whole Amalfi Coast seen from the sea, the way it was meant to be seen before the road was built. The villages follow one another along the cliffs: Praiano with its Saracen watchtower, the Fiordo di Furore, a narrow cut in the rock with a bridge across its mouth and a handful of houses at the bottom, and Conca dei Marini, where the Emerald Grotto takes its colour from sunlight entering through an opening below the waterline. We stop along the way for a last swim and water activities, with lunch on board, and arrive in Salerno in the afternoon with an aperitif served on the final stretch. Last night in port.

Saturday — Arrivederci
Day 8: Salerno | Departure
Breakfast on board, then disembarkation at 9:00 am. Salerno makes the last morning simple: the catamaran is alongside, so there is no tender and no transfer by sea, and the railway station and the motorway to Naples airport are a few minutes from the marina. The crew will have your luggage on the dock and your transfer waiting.
