St John, Norman Island, Cooper Island, Virgin Gorda and Jost Van Dyke from St Thomas
Two Countries, One Week
A 7-night crewed yacht charter that starts and ends in St Thomas and spends five of its nights in the British Virgin Islands. St Thomas has more direct flights from the US mainland than Tortola, and a number of the yachts we offer are based in the US Virgin Islands or pick up in St Thomas and St John as well as in Tortola, which makes this the simplest way into the BVI for many of our guests. Starting on the American side means clearing into the BVI on the way out, clearing out of the BVI at the end of the week and clearing back into the USVI; the crew handle the paperwork, it takes an hour or so each time and normally goes smoothly. Everyone aboard needs a passport, US citizens included. The route runs east through the Virgin Islands National Park on St John, across to Norman Island, Cooper Island and Virgin Gorda, back along the north side to Jost Van Dyke and home to St John and St Thomas. The longest leg is about 25 nautical miles; most are an hour or two.

US and British Virgin Islands Yacht Charter Itinerary
Total Distance: ~90nm Cruising Time: ~12 Hours
Route: St Thomas — St John — West End, Tortola — Norman Island — Cooper Island — Virgin Gorda (The Baths) — North Sound — Jost Van Dyke — St John — St Thomas
Vessel: Crewed Catamaran or Motor Yacht

Saturday — The national park
Day 1: St Thomas to St John | ~8nm
Boarding in St Thomas, either at Yacht Haven Grande in Charlotte Amalie, 15 minutes from the airport, or at Red Hook on the east end of the island, 30 minutes away and already halfway to St John. The first afternoon is a short run across Pillsbury Sound to St John, two thirds of which is the Virgin Islands National Park: no building on the north shore, mooring balls in every bay and the clearest water in the US Virgin Islands. The night is spent in one of the park’s bays. Maho Bay has seagrass a few yards off the beach where green turtles feed all day and can be swum with from the yacht; Oppenheimer Beach, next to Gibney Beach in Hawksnest Bay, is the strip of sand where the physicist had his cottage and one of the quietest beaches on the north shore. Welcome dinner on board.

Sunday — Clearing into the BVI, and Treasure Island
Day 2: St John to Norman Island via West End | ~16nm
Across the Narrows to West End, Tortola, where the yacht clears into the British Virgin Islands at Soper’s Hole; the crew take the passports ashore and the clearance usually takes under an hour. From there it is a short crossing of the Sir Francis Drake Channel to Norman Island, the uninhabited island said to be the model for Robert Louis Stevenson’s Treasure Island. The yacht anchors or picks up a mooring in The Bight, the large sheltered bay on its north side. The Willy T, a converted ship moored in the bay, is the floating bar of the BVI and a drink on board is part of the week. The snorkelling is at the Caves at the western point, three sea caves where pirates are supposed to have hidden their treasure, and at the Indians, four rock pinnacles off Pelican Island half a mile away, with the best reef on this side of the channel. Night in The Bight.

Monday — A hike, then the beach club
Day 3: Norman Island to Cooper Island | ~8nm
The morning is for the trails on Norman Island: the path from The Bight climbs the ridge to Spyglass Hill, the lookout where, in the story, the pirates watched for ships, with the whole Sir Francis Drake Channel laid out below. In the late morning the yacht moves east to Cooper Island, an hour’s run, and picks up a mooring in Manchioneel Bay. The beach club there is the lunch stop of the week, a restaurant on the sand with its own brewery, a coffee shop and a rum bar that stocks several hundred rums. The snorkelling is straight off the beach, along the rocks at the south end of the bay, where turtles graze and the reef drops into the channel; for divers, the wreck of the RMS Rhone off Salt Island is ten minutes away by tender. Night on the mooring at Cooper Island.

Tuesday — The Baths
Day 4: Cooper Island to Virgin Gorda | ~10nm
An hour north-east to Virgin Gorda and The Baths, the granite boulders the size of houses piled along the south-western shore, with pools, tunnels and grottoes between them and white sand beaches at either end. From the yacht the visit is by swimming in from the mooring, through the boulders and out at Devil’s Bay; from the dock at Spanish Town it is a taxi to the top of the trail and a walk down. Either way it is half a day, and best done early, before the day boats arrive. The afternoon is at anchor off Spanish Town or on the way round to the north of the island. Dinner is at Coco Maya on the beach at Spanish Town, on board on the beach, or at the new marina at Biras Creek in North Sound, if the yacht carries on round in the afternoon. Night off Spanish Town or in North Sound.

Wednesday — The lagoon
Day 5: North Sound, Virgin Gorda | ~10nm
North Sound is a lagoon at the eastern end of Virgin Gorda, enclosed by Prickly Pear Island, Mosquito Island and the reef, flat calm whatever the wind is doing outside, and the best place in the islands for the water toys: jet skis, sea bobs, paddleboards, the sailing dinghy, the towables, all in sheltered water. Around the shore are the Bitter End Yacht Club, rebuilt since the 2017 hurricanes, the resort and marina at Leverick Bay, where the Happy Arrr pirate show runs in the early evening and is as popular with the adults as with the children, and Saba Rock, the bar and restaurant on an islet in the middle of the sound, reached by tender for sunset drinks. Sir Richard Branson’s Necker Island is just outside the reef and a tour can be arranged in advance. The day is spent in the sound, on the toys and ashore; the night on a mooring off Leverick Bay or the Bitter End.

Thursday — The north side
Day 6: North Sound to Jost Van Dyke | ~25nm
The longest passage of the week, west along the north coast of Tortola, and a sail if the yacht has sails, with the trade wind behind. The stop on the way is Sandy Spit, a hump of white sand with a few palm trees and nothing else, off the east end of Jost Van Dyke, where the yacht anchors for a swim and lunch. In the afternoon she moves round to Great Harbour, the main bay and village of Jost Van Dyke, an island of about 300 people with no traffic lights. The evening is at Foxy’s, the beach bar at the end of the harbour that Foxy Callwood opened in 1968 and still sings in; his New Year’s Eve party is the biggest in the Caribbean. Night in Great Harbour.

Friday — White Bay, then back to the USVI
Day 7: Jost Van Dyke to St John | ~12nm
The morning and lunch are in White Bay, the next bay west: a strip of white sand with a reef across its mouth, the catamarans anchored in a line off the beach and the bars behind the palms. The Soggy Dollar Bar has no dock, which is how it got its name: you swim ashore and pay with wet money. It is where the Painkiller was invented, and it still makes them. After lunch the yacht clears out of the BVI at Great Harbour and sails back to the US Virgin Islands in the afternoon, with the sun going down behind St Thomas on the way. The last night is in Maho Bay on St John, with the turtles and the sunset, or in Christmas Cove on Great St James, between St John and St Thomas, which has snorkelling as good as any in the week and a pizza boat moored in the middle of the bay. Farewell dinner on board.

Saturday — Clearing in, and departure
Day 8: St John to St Thomas | ~8nm
Everyone aboard clears back into the United States in person in the morning, at customs and immigration in Cruz Bay on St John or in Charlotte Amalie. Disembarkation is at Yacht Haven Grande or Red Hook, where you boarded, with the airport 15 to 30 minutes away. Afternoon flights give time for Charlotte Amalie itself, the old Danish trading town with the alleys of shops between Main Street and the waterfront, or for the beach at Magens Bay on the north side of St Thomas.

Charter Costs
What a week like this costs
What this week costs depends on the boat — and in the Caribbean the rate is all-inclusive, so the figure you see is close to the figure you pay. A crewed catamaran has a median of about $32,000 a week, a motor yacht $95,000. See the full breakdown by boat type.
