The Ultimate 8-Day Ionian Islands Itinerary from Zakynthos

Six Islands and the Mainland Coast in One Week – From the Shipwreck to Venetian Corfu

This round trip from Zakynthos covers the whole Ionian chain: Kefalonia, Ithaca, Lefkada, Paxos, Antipaxos and Corfu, with a stop on the pine-covered coast of Epirus on the mainland. The distances are longer than on a Lefkas round trip, which is why this route is planned for a motor yacht: a morning passage, a beach or a sea cave for lunch, and a harbour village by late afternoon. The week opens with the Blue Caves and the Shipwreck beach, passes the Venetian waterfronts of Fiskardo and Assos, the mythic harbours of Ithaca, the islands off Nydri and the olive groves of Paxos, and reaches the UNESCO-listed Old Town of Corfu before turning south again along the white cliffs of Lefkada and Kefalonia.

Distances and times below are approximate. The itinerary is a sample, weather permitting; the final route is agreed with the captain on the day of embarkation.

Route: Zakynthos — Fiskardo — Ithaca — Lefkada — Syvota — Paxos — Antipaxos — Corfu — Assos — Zakynthos

Vessel: Motor Yacht

Day 1: The Blue Caves and the Shipwreck
Zakynthos to Fiskardo, Kefalonia ~54nm | 3h 30m

Day 1: The Blue Caves and the Shipwreck

Embarkation in Zakynthos port. The yacht heads north along the east coast to Cape Skinari, where the Blue Caves open into the limestone: a chain of arches and chambers lit from below, blue enough to colour the hull of a tender. The tender takes you inside; the water is deep and clear enough to swim in. Round the cape on the west coast is Navagio, the Shipwreck beach, where the rusting hull of the freighter Panagiotis has sat on the white shingle since 1980, closed off by cliffs on three sides and reachable only from the sea. The beach itself has been closed since 2023 because of the risk of rockfall from the cliffs, and the closure has been extended each year since: no landing on the sand and no swimming inside the cove, with boats keeping a set distance from the shore. The Shipwreck is seen from the water, and the swim stop is in one of the neighbouring coves. In the afternoon the yacht crosses to the northern tip of Kefalonia and ties up in Fiskardo, the one village on the island that survived the 1953 earthquake intact. Its pastel Venetian houses line a small harbour under cypress trees, and the quay is where the Ionian yachting season meets for dinner.

Day 2: Odysseus' Island
Fiskardo to Kioni, Ithaca via Meganisi or Gidaki ~25nm | 1h 40m

Day 2: Odysseus' Island

A short day with a long swim. From Fiskardo the choice is between the beaches of Ithaca itself, such as Gidaki, a pebble bay below steep slopes that has no road and is reached only by boat, and the coves of Meganisi to the north, where the Papanikolis sea cave is large enough to take the tender inside. The afternoon ends in Kioni, a horseshoe harbour on Ithaca’s east coast with neoclassical houses stepped up the hillside and three ruined stone windmills on the headland. Ithaca is Homer’s home of Odysseus and the island still carries the names: the Cave of the Nymphs above the port, the Fountain of Arethusa to the south. Dinner is on the quay at Kioni, where the tavernas sit a few feet from the water.

Day 3: Onassis' Island and the Lefkada Canal
Kioni to Lefkada Town via Skorpios and Nydri ~26nm | 1h 45m

Day 3: Onassis' Island and the Lefkada Canal

North across the Ithaca channel into the sheltered water between Lefkada and the mainland, a stretch of sea with the islets of Madouri, Sparti and Skorpios scattered across it. Skorpios is the private island bought by Aristotle Onassis in 1963, where he married Jacqueline Kennedy in 1968; it is still private and viewed from the water, which is also where the best swimming is. Lunch at anchor off Nydri, the resort town on Lefkada’s east coast, with the long bay of Vlicho behind it. In the afternoon the yacht runs up the east coast to Lefkada Town, entered through a canal past the Venetian fortress of Agia Mavra. Lefkada is the only Ionian island joined to the mainland, by a causeway and a floating bridge; its town was rebuilt after the earthquakes with timber upper storeys clad in painted corrugated sheet, which gives the streets their colour. The marina is a short walk from the main street and its cafés.

Day 4: The Pine Coast of Epirus and Olive-Grove Paxos
Lefkada to Gaios, Paxos via Syvota ~53nm | 3h 30m

Day 4: The Pine Coast of Epirus and Olive-Grove Paxos

A morning passage north along the mainland shore to Syvota, on the coast of Epirus opposite Corfu. Syvota is a cluster of pine-covered islets and bays with sand bottoms, among them Bella Vraka, a beach joined to the islet of Mourtemeno by a sandbar, and the shallow lagoon the locals call the Pool. Lunch and a swim here, then a short crossing west to Paxos, the smallest of the main Ionian islands and the greenest, planted almost edge to edge with Venetian-era olive groves. The yacht moors in Gaios, the island’s capital, whose harbour is a natural channel closed off by the two islets of Agios Nikolaos and Panagia, so still that the houses reflect in it. The waterfront is a single row of pastel houses, a square with a church, and tavernas. Paxos’ west coast, with its sea caves and the Tripitos rock arch, can be visited by tender in the evening light.

Day 5: Antipaxos and the Venetian Capital
Gaios to Corfu Town via Antipaxos ~36nm | 2h 20m

Day 5: Antipaxos and the Venetian Capital

Two miles south of Paxos lies Antipaxos, an island of a few dozen residents, vineyards and two beaches, Voutoumi and Vrika, that are the reason most yachts come: white sand and water the colour of the Caribbean. The morning is spent at anchor here. After lunch the yacht runs north along the length of Corfu’s east coast to Corfu Town, the Ionian capital. The Old Town was a Venetian fortress city for four centuries and has been on the UNESCO World Heritage list since 2007: the Old Fortress on its rock, the Spianada, the largest square in Greece, and the Liston arcade built by the French on the model of the Rue de Rivoli. Behind them are narrow lanes with laundry across them, the church of Saint Spyridon and the shops of the kantounia. The yacht berths in the marina a short drive from the Old Town, and the evening belongs to Corfu.

Day 6: The White Cliffs of Lefkada
Corfu to Assos, Kefalonia via Porto Katsiki ~84nm | 5h 30m

Day 6: The White Cliffs of Lefkada

The longest passage of the week, south past Paxos and the mainland to the west coast of Lefkada, where the island ends in a line of white limestone cliffs several hundred feet high. Below them are the beaches the island is known for: Kathisma, a long sweep of pale shingle, and Porto Katsiki, a crescent of white pebbles at the foot of a sheer cliff, best seen the way you will see it, from the water, with the turquoise band close to the shore. Lunch and a swim here. In the afternoon the yacht continues south to Assos on the north-west coast of Kefalonia, a village on a narrow isthmus joining the island to a peninsula crowned by a 16th-century Venetian castle. The bay is enclosed and calm, the houses are painted ochre and rose, and the few tavernas on the little quay are the evening.

Day 7: Myrtos and the Return to Zante
Assos to Zakynthos Town via Myrtos ~50nm | 3h 15m

Day 7: Myrtos and the Return to Zante

A few miles down the coast from Assos is Myrtos, the beach that appears on most photographs of Kefalonia: a long bow of white pebbles between two cliffs, with water that shades from turquoise to a deep blue a short way out. From the sea the whole bay is in view at once, which it never is from the road. A swim here before the passage south along Kefalonia’s west coast, past the Shipwreck beach again on the way, to Zakynthos Town. The town was flattened by the 1953 earthquake and rebuilt on its old Venetian plan, with arcaded streets and the square named after the national poet Dionysios Solomos, who was born here. Above it the hill of Bochali, with the ruined Venetian castle, looks over the harbour and across to the Peloponnese. The last evening is in town, a few minutes’ walk from the yacht.

Day 8: Disembarkation
Zakynthos

Day 8: Disembarkation

Breakfast on board and disembarkation in Zakynthos port. The airport is a 15-minute drive from the harbour. With time in hand before a flight, the south of the island has the bay of Laganas, a national marine park where loggerhead sea turtles nest, and the Keri caves on the south-west tip.
