What a Week Costs

The honest range

Charter prices are quoted per week for the yacht, not per person, so the number that matters is the weekly rate divided by however many of you sail. Two things to know before you read the table. First, the fleet serving St Barths is the Leeward Islands fleet, based mainly in Sint Maarten and Antigua and cruising the whole chain — these are its prices. Second, and more important: unlike the Virgin Islands or the Mediterranean, this region has no single pricing model, so what a rate covers has to be checked boat by boat. That is explained under the table.

There is deliberately no “all-in” column here: roughly half these yachts are all-inclusive and half are quoted plus expenses, so a single estimate would be misleading. The one region with two pricing models

Here is the thing that catches people out on this island, and the reason two quotes for similar boats can be 50% apart. In the Virgin Islands a crewed week is all-inclusive: crew, meals, drinks and fuel are already in the rate. Across the Mediterranean it is always plus expenses: the rate is the yacht and crew only, and you add an APA of 30 to 35% plus VAT. The Leewards are the one cruising ground where both models are common — on our reading of the wider market, a little over half the boats here are all-inclusive or close to it, and the rest are plus expenses. So on St Barths, unlike anywhere else we broker, you cannot tell what a rate covers by looking at the region. It has to be checked boat by boat. We state it explicitly on every proposal we send, and it is the first thing to ask about any quote you receive from anyone else.

The standard way to do this island

A crewed sailing catamaran is what most St Barths weeks actually look like: four cabins, a crew of two with a chef, and a boat shallow enough to anchor off Colombier or Gouverneur rather than take a berth in Gustavia, where space is scarce and expensive in season. Median around $32,000 a week — the same figure as the Virgin Islands, on a far more expensive island.

Space and speed between the Leewards

Power catamarans suit this cruising ground well, because the islands are far enough apart that speed buys you time ashore: St Barths to Anguilla, St Martin or Nevis in a morning rather than a day. Median around $67,000 a week.

Gustavia in high season

This is the category the island is famous for, and the one that fills Gustavia harbour between Christmas and New Year. Crew of four or more, a chef rather than a cook, and a tender worth using for the run into town. Median around $85,000 a week, with the upper tenth past $175,000 — and on the wider brokerage market the Leeward motor yacht median runs well above our own listings, because this is where the large boats winter.

A small category, and not the cheap one

Unusually, monohulls here are not the budget option. It is a small fleet and it skews to large classic and performance yachts rather than modest cruisers, so the median lands near $46,000 — above the catamarans. If you want a monohull for the sailing rather than the space, tell us and we will look at the smaller end of it.

Season

When it costs less, and when it costs most

St Barths has the sharpest season of any destination we broker. The Christmas and New Year weeks are the most expensive of the year anywhere in the Caribbean, quoted separately from the normal high season, booked a year or more ahead and often carrying minimum stays. January to April is high season proper. Late April, May and early December are the value weeks, with the same weather and a fraction of the crowd. The biggest single lever on price, though, is not the week but how many of you sail: a four-cabin catamaran costs the same for six people as for twelve, so filling the cabins can halve the per-person figure. Tell us the budget and the number of people rather than the boat.

St Barths Yacht Charter Prices: common questions

A crewed sailing catamaran runs a median of about $32,000 a week, a power catamaran $67,000 and a motor yacht $85,000. Sailing monohulls are a small and comparatively expensive category here at around $46,000. Whether those figures include your food, drink and fuel depends on the individual boat — see below.

Sometimes, and that is exactly the problem. The Leewards are the one cruising ground where both pricing models are common: a little over half the yachts are all-inclusive or nearly so, and the rest are quoted plus expenses, with an APA of 30 to 35% added on top. Two boats at the same headline rate can therefore differ by half again in what you actually pay. Always ask which model a quote uses; we state it on every proposal.

Christmas and New Year, by a wide margin — those two weeks are priced separately from the rest of high season, booked a year or more ahead and frequently carry minimum stays. January through April is high season. Late April, May and early December give the same weather for noticeably less.

The fleet that serves St Barths is the Leeward Islands fleet, based mainly in Sint Maarten and Antigua, and it cruises the whole chain — St Barths, Anguilla, St Kitts and Nevis, Antigua and Barbuda. A St Barths week usually means boarding on a neighbouring island or having the yacht meet you, and the prices on this page are the prices of that fleet.

On the charter fee itself, barely — the catamaran medians are close. The difference shows up around the charter: berthing in Gustavia in season, restaurants ashore, and the Christmas and New Year premium, which is steeper here than anywhere else in the Caribbean. If the budget is the binding constraint and the island is not, ask us to quote the Virgin Islands alongside.
