The route for people who want the atoll. Two nights inside Glover’s Reef, a jungle river, a bioluminescent lagoon after dark, and the reef islands on the way back north.

The route

This is the most ambitious of the three routes. From Cucumber Beach Marina (Old Belize) it heads south through Bluefield and Tobacco Caye, then crosses to Glover’s Reef — the southernmost atoll and a World Heritage Site — for two nights, before turning back inshore for the Sittee River and the bioluminescent lagoon and finishing on the barrier reef at South Water and Rendezvous.

Bluefield Range

Day 1: Bluefield Range

After a welcome orientation and safety briefing you sail to the Bluefield Range, a mangrove cluster teeming with wildlife and a fantastic kayaking destination. Paddle the narrow channels, look out for manatees, and take some bait and a fishing line along to see whether you can catch dinner.

Tobacco Caye

Day 2: Tobacco Caye

Sailing south at sunrise to Tobacco Caye, five acres of palm-fringed coral island sitting on the barrier reef, where you snorkel or dive straight from the beach. A couple of small resorts, one tiny bar with coconut water and rum cocktails, hammocks in the shade and thirty-nine islanders who are happy to tell you how remote island life actually works.

Southwest Caye

Day 3: Southwest Caye, Glover’s

Glover’s Reef is the southernmost atoll in Belize — a minefield of patch corals and epic marine life with a scattering of tiny islands along its outer rim. Southwest Caye makes a superb anchorage: a huge uninhabited white beach backed by coconut trees, a former plantation. Because it sits on the lee side of the island there is not a speck of ocean debris on it, just fallen coconuts and spotless sand. The island is split in two, and the northern half is home to Mirasol Dive Resort, where you are welcome to wander in for a cocktail at the over-the-water wooden bar.

Middle Caye

Day 4: Middle Caye, Glover’s

A morning of snorkelling — diving can be arranged through the Mirasol dive shop. As a designated National Marine Reserve and World Heritage Site, Glover’s holds roughly 700 pristine patch reefs with the richest variety of marine life in the Caribbean. Later you cruise up to Middle Caye, a wilderness zone with a marine research station run by the Wildlife Conservation Society that is open to visitors. There are displays explaining the ecology of the atoll and T-shirts sold to fund the conservation work. Walk down “hermit crab alley” and look up for the resident ospreys.

Sittee River

Day 5: Long Caye and the Sittee River

After an early snorkel you can call in at Long Caye, a remote, privately owned island run on serious eco-principles, home to Off The Wall Dive Resort and to Slickrock Belize Adventures — kiteboarding lessons and diving can sometimes be arranged, subject to their capacity. Their gift shop holds some of the most genuinely local things you will find in Belize. In the early afternoon you head inshore and meander up the Sittee River, where the shift from ocean to jungle is startling, and you can visit the sleepy seaside village of Hopkins with its Garifuna culture. After dark comes the best part: the bioluminescent lagoon, which lights up like a cosmic bath of stars as you glide through it.

South Water Caye

Day 6: South Water Caye

Sail to South Water Caye, a pristine twelve-acre private island and one of the most beautiful and exclusive in Belize. It sits on the reef at the north side of South Water Cut, a quarter-mile gap in the barrier reef where grunts, black groupers, snappers and moray eels shelter in the overhangs — spectacular snorkelling. Then a cold Belikin and a game of billiards at the Blue Marlin Lodge, one of our favourite little bars in the country, or pelican-watching as the fishermen come in to clean their catch.

Rendezvous Caye

Day 7: Rendezvous Caye

Rendezvous Caye is a tiny private island right on the barrier reef, with palapa shades, loungers and hammocks — the perfect place for a beach picnic on the last full day. Snorkel the deep-water wall straight from the shore and watch the contrast between the drop-off and the shallow corals. Look for the spotted eagle rays that come round the boats to see what is left of the catch.

Old Belize

Day 8: Back to the marina

A leisurely sail back to the marina at Cucumber Beach, with transfers waiting for the airport or Belize City.

One rate, almost everything in it

One weekly rate covers the catamaran and a dedicated crew of captain and chef / first mate, all meals from breakfast through canapés to dinner and dessert, an open ship’s bar with beer, rum cocktails and wine at dinner, air-conditioned queen cabins with private bathrooms, and the full kit for snorkelling, kayaking, paddleboarding and fishing. Transfers from Belize International Airport or Belize City are included. Outside the rate sit crew gratuity, scuba diving, specialty fishing and anything off the boat — spa treatments and restaurant dinners ashore.

This route is a sample. The sailing is shaped by the weather, the sea state, what your group feels like doing and the judgement of your captain, who knows which anchorage will be comfortable on any given night. Charters are planned around a midday arrival in Belize City; a later flight shortens the first day.

Yes, through the dive shop at Mirasol on Southwest Caye, arranged by your crew. We do not carry tanks aboard, so all diving in Belize is rendezvous diving with local operators and is charged separately. Glover’s has roughly 700 patch reefs inside the ring and sheer drop-offs around the outside.

A lagoon off the Sittee River where the water lights up as you move through it after dark. It is the reason this route turns inshore on day five, and it is the one thing guests talk about most afterwards.

Four nights is the minimum outside the festive season; between 19 December and 5 January the minimum is seven. Charters are planned around a midday arrival and a midday departure, so a late flight shortens the first day.
